NADRA Photo Guidelines Explained 2026: The Complete Checklist
There is a sinking feeling every Pakistani knows too well. You submit your online application on the Pak Identity website, pay the Challan fee, and wait. A few days later, you get an email. Rejection. The reason? 'Biometric data acquisition failed' or 'Photo does not meet criteria'.
It feels like a waste of time and money. But here is the thing: the system isn't rejecting you personally. It is rejecting a file that doesn't meet the extremely specific International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. NADRA's automated system uses strict biometric algorithms to map your face. It isn't just looking for a picture; it is looking for a data map.
To help you save your application fee and your sanity, I have compiled a comprehensive breakdown of the official guidelines. These are the rules that aren't always obvious but are critical for approval.
The Golden Rule No Glasses Allowed
This is the number one reason for rejection in 2026. Since 2016, NADRA has strictly enforced a No Glasses Policy. This applies to everyone.
- Sunglasses: Obviously not allowed.
- Prescription Glasses: Also NOT allowed. Even if you are legally blind without them, you must take them off for the photo.
Why? It comes down to reflections. Even expensive anti-glare lenses catch light from the window or flash. This glare creates white spots over your eyes. The biometric scanner needs to read your iris (eye color and pattern) and the distance between your pupils. If a frame rim covers your eye or a lens reflection hides your pupil, the system cannot verify it is you.

Head Coverings Hijab and Turban Rules
Religious head coverings are absolutely allowed, but there are strict conditions to ensure the face remains visible for security purposes.
For Women Hijab and Niqab
If you wear a Hijab or Dupatta, ensure that your full facial features are visible. The rule is Hairline to Chin and Ear to Ear.
- Forehead: Do not pull the scarf down too low. The scanner needs to see your forehead to map your face shape.
- Shadows: Ensure the scarf doesn't cast a dark shadow on your face. Adjust your lighting as described in our lighting guide.
- Niqab: For the photo itself, the face veil must be lifted. This is a legal requirement for identification. For online applications, you must upload a photo with the face uncovered.
For Men Turbans and Caps
Turbans (Pagri) and caps are permitted if they are part of your religious or cultural attire. However, they must not obscure the forehead or cast shadows over the eyes. The bottom edge of the turban should sit high enough to show the full forehead.
Facial Expression Look Boring to Get Approved
We all want to look good in our ID photos. A smile usually makes us look friendlier. But for NADRA, friendly is bad.
You must maintain a Neutral Expression.
- Mouth must be closed.
- No teeth should be visible.
- Eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera.
- Eyebrows should be relaxed (not raised in surprise or frowning).
When you smile, your cheekbones rise and your eye shape changes. This distorts the biometric map. A neutral face provides the most accurate baseline for facial recognition software. For a deeper discussion on this, check out Can I Smile in My CNIC Photo?.
The Freshness Factor The 6 Month Rule
Do not try to be smart and scan a passport size photo you had lying in your drawer from 5 years ago.
NADRA requires the photo to be taken within the last 6 months. If you are renewing your CNIC after 10 years, you look different. You have aged, your hairline might have changed, or you might have gained weight. The system compares your new photo with your old data. If you upload an old photo, it defeats the purpose of renewal.
Furthermore, scanning a printed photo creates a 'moire pattern' (visible texture dots) that confuses digital scanners. Always take a fresh digital photo with your phone. It is free and takes 2 minutes.
Technical Specs You Cannot Ignore
Finally, there are the technical constraints of the website itself. Even if your face looks perfect, the file might get rejected if the computer code doesn't like it.
- File Size: Must be under 60KB. This is tiny! Use our tool to compress it.
- Dimensions: 350x467 pixels is the standard.
- Format: JPG or JPEG only. PNG files will result in an upload error.
If you are struggling with file formats, read our guide on Converting PNG to JPG for NADRA.
Following these guidelines might seem tedious, but it is the only way to ensure a smooth application process. Take your time, set up your lighting, and remove those glasses. A few minutes of preparation now saves you weeks of delay later.
